Rajinder Prabhneed Kaur was murdered in her apartment on Monday 19th July. Her husband, Navdeep Ghotra had fled the scene by the time the police arrived. Their 5 year old son was there; their 7 year old daughter had fled. This case of intimate partner violence is the 14th femicide in Quebec this year.
At SAWCC (South Asian Women’s Community Centre) with our 40 years of experience, we identify the cause of this violence against women and children as rooted in patriarchy.
Patriarchy creates and perpetuates a culture of male power and privilege. Patriarchal positions put forward justifications and excuses for male violence against women and children. No other forms of violence are tolerated and dealt with in the same way! Male violence against women and children is a societal issue and we must all act collectively to end it now.
We are not safe until ALL women and children are safe!
Please take a moment to listen to and read a beautiful poem, Naveen Heer , composed and sung by Nilambri Ghai, that speaks of freedom, and to the strength and resilience of women.
